"(NBC) -- As radiation continues to threaten residents of northern Japan, fears of radiation exposure have spread across the Pacific.
In Seattle, residents have bought-up one store's entire supply of potassium iodide, a
radiation-fighting compound.
Fears also being felt in Oregon and southern California.
Experts believe the radioactive risk to the West Coast is low.
"It's pretty safe for folks even on the West Coast to not run out and by droves of potassium iodide," says Dr. Kenneth Newkirk.
That thought is thought shared by the U.S. Secretary of Energy.
"I think there is essentially no concern in terms of the health effects on American shores," Secretary Steven Chu told reporters Tuesday.
The Japanese disaster has rekindled efforts in Congress for a national supply of potassium iodide to be distributed to communities located near nuclear facilities.
